Are you a Risk-taker, a Caretaker, or an Undertaker$%: The Bible says we "must believe that God is (not 'was' or 'will be')." (Hebrews 11:6) God revealed His Name to Moses as "I AM" -- Not "I WAS" or "I WILL BE" -- He said, "I AM."

In every generation, God is moving. In every generation, you can see three responses to His moving among His people:

RISK-TAKERS Every great move of God began with RISK-TAKERS. Someone was willing to "pay the price" and sacrifice to accomplish a worthwhile goal.

Many have gone ahead of us sacrificing their reputation, position, finances, and their personal peace and security. They were "Spiritual Gamblers" -- They knew they could sacrifice a little in order to get a lot! They were "Spiritual Entrepreneurs" They laid aside "NOW" for the sake of "LATER." They risked the wrath of the established system and pursued God's current moving among men.

The nation of Israel gathered Manna daily in the wilderness. New Manna every day! The only day they "doubled-up" was Sabbath (so as to "keep it holy").

RISK-TAKERS are never satisfied with yesterday's Manna -- yesterday's Word. What is God saying today$%: "Today, if you hear His voice, harden not your hearts." (both Old and New Testaments testify)

The day we eat "yesterday's Manna" is the day we cease moving spiritually! It has happened in EVERY Great Awakening and Revival of the past. "Spiritual offspring" replace the RISK-TAKERS (that is, the Movement's leadership). But, there's a problem. They do not have the heart of a RISK-TAKER. They don't possess the Spiritual drive that propelled their RISK-TAKER-Fathers.

Rather than anointed RISK-TAKERS, they become anemic CARETAKERS of another's vision!

CARETAKERS Unfortunately, CARETAKERS get bogged down in the details of keeping a "well-oiled machine" going. They polish the machinery of Revival and blessing in order to keep it running "just like the good old days." They forget that those "good old days" were not so good for their forefathers. (It wasn't easy being a RISK-TAKER!)

CARETAKERS prefer luxury, comfort and ease. It's "business as usual" -- "Keep the status quo" -- It was "good enough" for the RISK-TAKERS and it's "good enough" for me.

In Luke 5:39, Jesus warned of those who said the old wine was "good enough." RISK-TAKERS take the grapes of righteousness and stamp out New Wine for New Wineskins. CARETAKERS drink the wine that the RISK-TAKERS stamped out.

CARETAKERS are concerned with externals -- Legalism, buildings, etc. When Jesus walked this earth, the people marveled at the Temple. "Look at these wonderful buildings!" But, they MISSED the TRUE TEMPLE -- Jesus.

In Bible College and Seminary I was trained to be a CARETAKER. "Here's how you keep it going like it's always been going." That didn't suit me then, and it doesn't suit me now.

Some lament for "the good old days" when their church, movement, denomination, etc., was in the flow of God's blessing. But, are we willing to pay the price$%: News Flash -- It will NEVER be that way again ... but it CAN be BETTER!

Haggai (chapter 2) told the Jews and tells us today: "The glory of the latter house will be greater than glory of the former house." It can't be repeated, but it CAN be surpassed!

It gets worse ... CARETAKERS habitually kill newly raised-up RISK-TAKERS! They feel it's their duty to protect the status quo so much, that they refuse to allow God to move again.

"Matthew 23:29-34 "Your (caretaker) fathers killed the (risk-taker) prophets." They even built "monuments" to those they killed!

UNDERTAKERS Did you ever wonder how the term "UNDERTAKER" came about$%: Because they would "undertake" anything -- including embalming and burying the dead -- something no one else wanted to do!

Becoming a mortician is an honorable trade and service to the community. But, it's not for me. I am uncomfortable at funerals. I am not afraid of death, I just hate it. It's the last "enemy" the Bible says -- and Jesus came to not only free us from death (eternal life), but to free us from the FEAR of death!

In the spiritual world, UNDERTAKERS feel "called" to BURY anything new! New idea$%: New plan$%: New program$%: Kill it and bury it!

The "cause of death" differs:

1. We never tried it that way before!
2. We tried it that way before, and it didn't work!

This is true of us all: As we get CLOSER to an UNDERTAKER, our vision dims, our hearing diminishes, and our mobility stiffens. It's true Spiritually, as well: The closer we get to an UNDERTAKER-MENTALITY, our spiritual-vision will dim, our Spiritual-hearing will diminish, our Spiritual-mobility will stiffen. UNDERTAKER-Pastors speak of what was once alive, but is now a memory! Revelation 3:1-2 speaks of a church that has a name that they are "alive, but are dead." Tragic.

I love Caleb in the Book of Joshua. At age 40 he said, "The giants can't hold us back, let's take the 'Promised Land'." But, the Nation believed the bad report rather than Caleb's. So they wandered for 40 years in the wilderness. At age 85, Caleb said, "I want to fight the giants in the hill country." The "hill country," no less. At 85 you'd think he would at least request level ground!

Unfortunately, the average church is divided up evenly between RISK-TAKERS, CARETAKERS, and UNDERTAKERS. That's why so little ever gets done!

Think about it, what if a RISK-TAKER-Pastor goes to a CARETAKER-Congregation$%: He has no interest in taking care of their "monuments" -- he wants to forge ahead to conquer new territories!

Remember the city map$%: How will you respond$%:

• UNDERTAKERS -- Look for "good hospitals" and a "good place to retire"
• CARETAKERS -- Look for areas with "good schools" and "good neighborhoods"
• RISK-TAKERS -- Look for the uncharted, undiscovered, unexplored land!
